MALEK Theatre

Lobby Phase

100% Completed  |  $0.00 Estimated Completion Cost

This phase is 100% completed! Chris Rose of New Model LLC was hired to complete the plasterwork to repair the damage caused by years of water leaks. Once that was complete, he donated his time to help volunteer Tony Fitz paint the ceiling and walls back to their original colors.

An exact replica of the original border painted by artist Merle Reed in 1946 was created. This was then printed by Signs & More and installed by Casey Stoner. It is sized and placed true to the original and is perfect! Dorothy Malek would be so proud. She had talked of how sad it was when they had painted over the original artwork.

The lobby display windows were restored and the original ceiling light fixture was able to be saved and restored as well. It is now hanging back in the lobby where it belongs. The fixture was originally custom-built specifically for The Malek and with the help of C & M Woodworking in Jesup, they were able to create replacement pieces that match the original wall fixtures in the auditorium.

The main entrance doors as well as the doors into the foyer/lounge are all completely original including the handles and closers. As you enter the lobby you are standing on the original terrazzo floor, complete with the red "M" in the middle.
